What's Cathy Hurlbut up to now?

In the inimitable words of Stephen Stills and Buffalo Springfield, “Something’s happen here, but what it is ain’t exactly clear.” Then again, it might be clearer than we think.
At today’s (9/19) special Finance Committee meeting, chairman Hurlbut, who, in the past, wouldn’t allocate a solitary budgetary dime to starving nun, suddenly espoused one of my favorite causes – paying our Kane County prosecutors and PD’s the going rate.
After board member Phil Lewis broached the subject of making prosecutor pay hikes a priority, not only did Hurlbut add PD’s to that list, but she immediately moved to raise the county tax levy by the full amount to ostensibly cover those raises. Of course, Mark Davoust quickly seconded the motion.
Not so fast! There are a couple of problems with that semi-empty gesture.
First, as State’s Attorney Joe McMahon aptly pointed out and Ms. Hurlbut certainly knows, you can’t consider an item that isn’t on the agenda. And second, the county tax levy doesn’t come up for consideration until sometime in the spring.
So when you add Ms. Hurlbut’s amazing budgetary 180 to the fact that she was playing goo goo eyes with Chief Judge Robert Spence (why was the Chief Judge at a special Finance Committee meeting anyway?) to the fact that 16th Circuit Judges Tim Sheldon and Robert Janes just announced their retirment, and I think you get the picture.
I can’t believe Cathy thinks she can slide into one of those plum positions, but her husband John was supposedly up for some sort of bench appointment and then lost his 2011 election bid to serve on the 16th subcircuit.
Could this be why should put on a show today?
You really have to give Cathy Hurlbut credit for having the biggest cohones in the county and for her unceasing efforts to get the KC taxpayers to support her family in the lifestyle to which they would like to become accustomed.
