The unravelling of a Republican candidate

The candidacy of Donald Trump is the open sewer of American conservatism. – Conservative Columnist Bret Stephens

We’ll save the column on how, like their MAGA counterparts, progressives, particularly the Chicago variety, can’t begin to govern once elected. Why? Because just as it is with an Indy car crash, a celebrity meltdown, or another Dan Ryan gapers block, I can’t keep my eyes off the Grand Cheeto’s train wreck of a campaign finale.

The reason his antics almost appear to be normal is because the media insists upon giving him a pass. Though to be fair, Trump fatigue is a real thing.

It’s as if he wants to lose the election, which would actually make sense considering his current comportment. At least his role model, Adolf Hitler, could stay on message while Trump turns every campaign event into an airing of “grievances” and an outlet for white male bigotry.

Talk about your snowflakes!.

Even if it was intended to be a “joke,” giving his “comedian” lackey the green light to call Puerto Rico “an island of floating garbage” is virtually unfathomable even for a campaign that never had any rules to begin with.

As Ronald Reagan presciently noted, “Latinos are Republican. They just don’t know it yet,” but today’s MAGA infected GOP continues to push them directly into the Democratic camp. There are half-a-million Puerto Rican voters in Pennsylvania alone, and if that stupid statement inspires just 10 percent of them into action, they could make the difference in what’s been a too-close-to-call race.

Worse yet, that Puerto Rico comment riled some celebrities with more social media followers than the population of most European countries. We just discussed how political endorsements don’t matter, but when you get megastar Bad Bunny to openly come out against you and tap into all that Hispanic anger, it’s a problem.

If only 1 percent of his Instagram followers vote against Trump, that’s 450,000 more votes for Harris in a race where 155 million Americans are expect to make it to the polls. And that can be the difference between victory and defeat. Jennifer Lopez similarly sided with Harris and she has 250 million Instagram fans.

Though that stupid joke might be enough to cost Trump the election, the self-immolation process was barely underway. After he finished dissing brown people – again – he called for the assassination of political opponent Liz Cheney and any random journalist who happened to get between him and a bullet.

Who says hateful asinine shit like that? Of course, the average MAGAist’s third grade defense involves referring to something a barely known Democrat said way back in 1971. The truth is no national Democrat has said anything beginning to approximate Donald Trump’s daily declarations. I’ve said it before. Talk to your boss or wife that way and you’ll be jobless and single.

Calling Kamala Harris “retarded” and a “prostitute?” I know we’ve become inured to his venomous bile spewing, but how would you react if someone referred to your mother or sister in such glowing terms? Then he’s going to “protect” women “whether they like it or not?” Aside from Donald Trump, who says that kind of stupid shit?

After an earlier admission to losing the election, Trump is right back to claiming he “never should’ve left the White House.” Aren’t we all tired of this poor, poor pitiful me complex? The unique lynchpin of a democracy is the peaceful transition of power. It doesn’t require an armed revolution to “throw the bums out.” Though there was absolutely no proof of that possibility in 2020, he’s claiming the 2024 proceedings are being undermined as we speak.

This election is going to be the most closely watched in U.S. history with absolutely no chance of the kind of massive voter fraud it would require to overturn a presidential race.

But what bothers me the most about Trump is his inability to endure the slightest perceived slight. It’s gotten so bad that his diatribes against those “insults” are dominating his campaign rallies at a time when he should be making his closing argument to the American people.

He spent 20 minutes in Pennsylvania railing against a number of “inaccurate” polls, specifically calling out a well-regarded Iowa company that shows Harris has moved to three points ahead in that state. It doesn’t matter that her data correctly predicted Trump’s 2016 Iowa victory, because now she’s an “enemy” who’s fabricating numbers because she’s out to get him.

C’mon! Why would any longstanding polling firm risk their hard-earned reputation by skewing the numbers so they look like complete idiots after the votes are tallied? This three-point lead may signal a shift, but it’s still within the poll’s margin of error which makes it a dead heat.

But Trump can’t leave it alone because he’s incapable of operating at anything greater than a sixth-grade level.

I understand the cult-like nature of MAGAism and how generally reasonable people with lackluster lives can be taken in by this conman. As the great P. T. Barnum said, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” But at some point even those starry-eyed believers have to realize that Trump isn’t nearly the man he says he is.

And maybe we’ve finally reached that point because it would seem that even his supporters are getting tired of his schtick.

His once overflow rally crowds are fading at a time his campaign should be peaking. In Raleigh there were over a thousand empty seats and no line to get in. The arena in Reading, PA, was only half full so they delayed his speech for an hour until they could fill more seats. Only a few thousand of the faithful attended the Pittsburgh even where the empty upper deck was curtained off. Trump didn’t fill the Macon, Georgia, venue and people started walking out shortly after he started speaking. And his subsequent rallies in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Georgia were a shadow of what they formerly were.

I’ve been the first one to point out the Democrats’ fascinating flaws, but as bad as that party can be, they don’t nearly rise to the level of Trump’s brand of bigotry, mendaciousness, narcissism, and outright hate.

Meanwhile, the Democrats have managed to rein in their absurd progressive element, we’re the only First World country that didn’t suffer a post-COVID recession, the “inflation” turned out to be corporate price gouging, and the stock market, Trump’s favorite indicator, is predicting continued economic strength.

All Trump had to do to be reelected in 2020 was effectively deal COVID, but he took the pandemic as a personal affront and he couldn’t cope with it. All he had to do in 2024 was stay on message and he would’ve beaten the black woman by virtue of being a white male, but all he’s  capable of is focusing on those” affronts.”

And now he’s going to lose again.
