County Board Member Cathy Hurlbut strikes again!

County Board Member Cathy Hurlbut strikes again!

How is it that some people manage to weasel their way into all sorts of positions of power and, found out far too late, manage to leave several swaths of destruction two miles wide?
Apparently tired of trying to take down Kane County, county board member and former court clerk candidate Cathy Hurlbut took her act to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin where she may  have topped her previous peccadilloes which include but are not limited to, not paying her Kane County real estate taxes on time, courting a Court Clerk lawsuit that cost county taxpayers a half a million dollars, bouncing a check to the county she serves, and settling a lawsuit alleging her son sexually assaulted a young woman in the Hurlbut home.
We already covered the fact that Ms. Hurlbut owns a unit at The Cove, a swanky 222 unit Lake Geneva getaway. Of course, she pays those real estate taxes on time. What we didn’t know is she managed to get elected Cove Board President, an office she’s held for the last 15 years give or take.
Since Ms. Hurlbut can’t hide her fabulous personality forever, some of those folks have mounted efforts to remove her – one serious – but given the disparate nature and locations of those 200 condo owners, she’s managed to deflect them – until now.
You see, one of her recent pet projects was to add two banquet rooms to the back of that resort to the tune of $2.5 million. Unit owners were given the option of paying 10 grand up front or making monthly payments. About 90 of them chose the lump sum.
Since we all know, given the option of making a really bad financial decision or none at all,  Ms. Hurlbut would rather choose the latter, those pricey additions simply haven’t performed as expected.
Fast forward to this year, and PNC Bank calls in the loan the Cove board signed off on to pay for the upgrade. In what one can only surmise was one of her infamous fits of pique, board president Hurlbut stopped paying the loan last June despite The Cove owing a cool $1.4 million.
As you might imagine, the the bank was not amused by this turn of events and, when Hurlbut and the board refused to respond to their calls or demands for paperwork, they placed the whole shebang into receivership. PNC’s plan is to completely take over The Cove at the next court date on Sept. 27.
What those condo owners want to know is, where did all their money go. They also asked for the financial records, but Hurlbut has completely ignored the bylaws requiring those requests to be honored within 24 hours.
To paraphrase one of those owners, “We’re facing financial Armageddon.”
And the management company is no help because, right before the board extended their contract for another five years without any unit owner input, they contributed 5 grand to Hurlbut’s court clerk campaign.
My suggestion to my multitude of sources was to immediately hire an attorney and take this issue directly to the Walworth County States Attorney. I can hear the sound of paper shredders all the way down here. You know she’s trying to cover her tracks faster than bigfoot.
Maybe this is the time that karma finally catches up with Cathy Hurlbut.
