How to handle the press part 1

When political novices come to me for counsel (at the county board level or higher), the first thing I tell them is to engage the press. And sadly, that eminently clear statement is typically met with a resounding silence. So, to all my friends in Kane and Kendall County who harbor thoughts of running for office, please take a closer look at how Democratic KC Coroner Candidate Tao Martinez has managed to do just that.
He got space in the KC Chronicle by calling for the coroner office staff to be non-partisan.
He got coverage here by reaching out to me and subsequently reaching out to Republicans.
He got every local news outlet to carry his picture with his endorsement of Chris Lauzen.
And even thought it didn’t cost him one thin dime, he didn’t have to compromise his principles in the process. He didn’t have to shout like Joe Walsh, he didn’t have to dish dirt like that nitwit Bill Foster, and he didn’t have to be as obnoxious as Jim Oberweis.
This is how you do it folks – take notes!
