Left, Right and You is comin’ up!

We’ll open this afternoon’s festivities with 25th District State Senator Jim Oberweis who will discuss his continuing push to allow Illinois car dealerships to open on Sundays. What this liberal wants to know is, why are all those conservative business owners so dead set against this measure?

Last week Larry and I discussed social activist groups that don’t work (and liberal social activist groups are the worst). So we’ll finish off that discussion with social activist groups that do work in the second half of the who. Sadly, there aren’t very many of them out there.

That’s Left, Right and You, Mondays from 9 to 10 a.m. and Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. with the Smiling Conservative, Larry Jones, and the Liberal Curmudgeon, Jeff Ward, on WRMN AM1410. Be there or be square!

  1. Speaking as a consumer, I was really glad when they passed the law closing the dealerships on Sundays. I can go and look at the cars and write down info w/o salespeople looking over my shoulder. Then I can take the info home and do more research on the car, compare at other dealers, etc. I believe (but can’t quote numbers) the majority of consumers agree with me. If Oberweis’ bill passes, they’ll all be open (let’s be honest, there’s no real choice for the dealers — if any of their competition is open, they’ll have to be open too).

    • Jeff, While I didn’t think about it from that perspective and I’m certainly not a conservative, I can’t come up with a good reason why the government should force an entire industry to shut down on Sunday.

Also, I can’t envision myself buying a new car again – they’re a really bad value – and if I buy a used car it will likely be Carmax or a private party. And I kinda like to be able to go to Carmax on Sunday if need be!

      • I haven’t bought a new car in years, either. We’re a CarMax family. But even there it’s nice to scout things w/o worrying about the sales person (although they’re much less obnoxious than other dealers). I also wonder how much the industry is being “forced” to shut down — I thought the vast majority of dealers like things the way they are?
