I love it whenever I’m provided with opportunity to offer a hearty a shout out to those folks in authority who realize that setting the appropriate example is half the battle. Sadly, it doesn’t happen often enough.
Case in point! It drives me nuts whenever I see a police officer rolling down the road on a handheld cell phone. Despite their on-duty dispensation from the new hands-free law, we all know they’re no better in that situation than the average distracted driver.
So when DH reporter Susan Sarkauskas noted that the Elburn PD just installed speakerphones in each and every squad car, I immediately wanted to stand up and salute because that’s exactly how it should be done.
According to Ms. Sarkauskas, Chief Smith said they wanted to do the right thing and didn’t want to “flaunt” their exemption. All I can say is, I certainly hope this kind of thinking is contagious. So despite the prospect of exposing my ever balding head, my hat’s off to the EPD for doing it right!
